Will there be gasoline after 100 years
12.05.04 (3:44 am)   [edit]
I am not going to live for next 100 years so why to bother. However, lets see if it will be there. With the rate, gas consumption is going on, I doubt there will be any gas left. With the gas eating SUV's and big gas-guzzler cars, the gas could easily vanish from the face of the earth.

If there will be no fresh air to breath after 100 years then why worry about gas. With the monsters (vehicles) eating gases and throwing harmful exhaust thus damaging environment, the pollution level could be easily achieved where the air present for breathing will be poisoned.

But why to worry, I love riding SUV's and I could afford it for next 20 years. What about speed? I am comfortable with my car so why to go for hybrid cars.

If you also think like me then think again about the generation who would follow us. What we will leave for them? Do think and go for Hybrid cars as I have finally decided after looking at all the pros and cons. Lets give clean air to the generation next. Please :)

There won't be enough gas to last for than 30 years at the rate the world is consuming gasoline. e.g China will potentially be a giant with a thrust for gasoline as its people are beginning to purchase more cars

There are trillions of cubic feet or proven reserves in Colorado and Canada alone. The point is they are in tar sands or in shale and only economically exploitable at a consistent crude price over $30/barrel. The energy companies have a wait and see attitude at this time of $50+ crude levels.
As to hybrids, I like to see an energy economy break down before I believe a word about hybrid cars. They are ultimately powered by the combustion engine and have to overcome the energy losses from their electric charge/store/propel driveline. (at best an efficiency ratio of 13%. So 85%+ of the input energy of the combustion engine IS WASTED !!!!!)On top of that comes extra weight for the batteries. All those losses have to be compensated by 1) regeneration of brake energy and 2) more optimal running zone of the combustion engine.
Can't believe that it makes sense. Those good EPA numbers could have been derived by running a car with full batteries in the 20 or so minute cycle of the test. They should test them with empty batteries too.
Suspect hybrid technology is nothing but a big fraud.

At the current rate of consumption it is doubtful it will take 100 years. Let us remember the world is consuming about 4 BILLION gallons of raw petroleum per day... This consumption rate can't be good, and when the pumps go dry, we're done.
As far as being totally out of gas? No, I do not think we will run completely out, but I do think it will be so expensive that nobody can afford it.
Peace

As a 2003 HCH owner purchased in May 2002 I have 73,000 miles on to date. I average 44 MPG (at the pump), commute 100 miles each workday.

There are other added features that most Hybrids have.
1. No conventional Mechanical starter to wear out. Uses the Electric Motor.
2. No Alternator. It converts the power from the IMA battery pack for the 12 volt accessory battery.
3. The Honda Civic Hybrid has a timing chain, instead of a belt.
4. No Mechanical Distributor.
5. No clutch or torque converter if using the constant variable transmission.
6. I still have 1/2 of my brakes at 73,000 because most braking energy is sent to the IMA battery.

The savings from lack of mechanical wear components should be factored in with the hybrid vehicles.
Most articles dont do this.

Parts houses would lobby if all of a sudden everyone purchased these hybrid vehicles.

There are two keys to happiness with the civic hybrid: patience and learning to drive how it wants you to. The first 12k miles we averaged 41.6 mpg, which is well below the promised 47. Even then though, we were still doing pretty well on the city roads except when the weather was really cold (auto-stop doesn't engage). We also learned to accelerate a little more slowly and to let the car come to a stop rather than speed to the stop signs. Now we are getting 48-49 mpg, even on the freeway, provided we go 68mph and no higher. I know that this will not save the planet, but it is well worth the money and it does deliver the promised economy if you are willing to alter your driving a little.

The people talking about running out of gas in the next 30 years are just stupid, same with the 100 years aspect. We (the U.S.) have enough oil just in one part of Alaska to last the whole world 100 years at today's consumption rate, just in one part and we havent even begun to tap 45% of the oil wells remaining so stuff that in your pipe and smoke it.
