Advantages of Hybrid car and Hybrid cars disadvantage
10.06.04 (5:07 pm)   [edit]
Hybrid electric vehicles are electric cars with a difference. In hybrid carsthe energy comes not only through batteries but also from internal combustion engine which drives generator which generates electricity. The major advantages are:-

Advantages for Hybrid cars:

1. The vehicle is lighter and roomier then a electric car due to less heavy batteries.
2. Engine smaller and lighter as it has to produce less power and remaining comes from batteries.
3. Engine runs on constant speed as acceleration of vehicle is assisted by batteries and hence saving of fuel.
4. Configured braking which captures kinetic energy which in turn is used for charging batteries.
5. Less damage to environment as less exhoust.
6. Less reliability on Fuel
7. Car friendly laws
8. $$ saving for gas
9. Less trip to gas station and in long queues hence time saving.

Disadvantages for Hybrid car.

1. High cost of vehicle.
2. More Weight due to extra hardware.
3. Reduced storage capacity.

Above points shows that hybrid cars is worth some extra $$ as benifits are far then enough then disadvantage. So grab one for you as fast as possible and try to leave gas eaters.

I like to see an energy economy break down before I believe a word about hybrid cars. They are ultimately powered by the combustion engine and have to overcome the energy losses from their electric charge/store/propel driveline. On top of that extra weight for the batteries. All those losses have to be compensated by 1) regeneration of brake energy and 2) more optimal running zone of the combustion engine.
Can't believe that it makes sense. Those good EPA numbers could have been derived by running a car with full batteries in the 20 or so minute cycle of the test. They should test them with empty batteries too.
Suspect hybrid technology is nothing but a big fraud.

not to mention that the cost to replace the batteries that only last 80,000mi ( about 3 yrs worth of driving just alittle under 30k an year) can cost anywhere form $5000 - $8000 i would rather see more research and delovopment on alternative fuels to run in cars we curently have becuase lets face it not everyone can afford $20,000 for a new hybrid car that only comes with 93hp check out this website (http://www.dynamotive.com/biooil/) a renewable resouce to make synthetic oil %100 not a fossil fuel oil. with alittle more research it could be made to run in internal combustion motors.

As a 2003 HCH owner purchased in May 2002 I have 73,000 miles on to date. I average 44 MPG (at the pump), commute 100 miles each workday.

There are other added features that most Hybrids have.
1. No conventional Mechanical starter to wear out. Uses the Electric Motor.
2. No Alternator. It converts the power from the IMA battery pack for the 12 volt accessory battery.
3. The Honda Civic Hybrid has a timing chain, instead of a belt.
4. No Mechanical Distributor.
5. No clutch or torque converter if using the constant variable transmission.
6. I still have 1/2 of my brakes at 73,000 because most braking energy is sent to the IMA battery.

The savings from lack of mechanical wear components should be factored in with the hybrid vehicles.
Most articles dont do this.

Parts houses would lobby if all of a sudden everyone purchased these hybrid vehicles.

Rented a Prius last July/Aug. Got 50 mpg ave. Had plenty of storage for 2 adults and 1 child luggage. Was comfortable and quick on the go. From what I see for prices it is not that much out of line and considering the price of gas let alone the benefit to the environment it is hard not to consider purchasing one. If in doubt go test drive one.

hybrid cars take 7-12 hours to recharge the batterie and it only goes 50 miles before it will need to be recharged!!

Don't forget the disadvantages of
1) high cost on repair
2) may have electric shot after accident.

I would doubt about this new technology. I already doubted about internal combustion engines; that's why I still drive an antique steam engine cugnot car...
