Hybrid Cars and Pollution
07.12.05 (9:14 am)   [edit]
Automobile companies are spending so much money in developing economical cars, which could be used as an alternative to gasoline powered cars. Nevertheless, why so if public is happy with the gasoline cars and is quite happy with the current technology. It is not only the economy of the cars these vehicles provide but much more then that. The major advantages of hybrid cars are the lower emissions.

When we talk about emissions, it refers to the gases released due to burning of gasoline, which is released in the environment from the tailpipe. This gas includes hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. These cases are commonly known as greenhouse gases. These gases traps heat in the atmosphere, which could have been deflected back to space.

These greenhouse gases increase the air temperature and sub-surface ocean temperatures. This unfortunate increase in the temperature is primarily due to pollution caused by vehicles and industrial emissions of harmful gases.

However, hybrid cars could not be 100% safe for environment but we could take it as intermediary solution for the huge emissions problems we are facing in the recent times.

You know, I think the majority of people care about image, not saving the environment. Its sad.

The masses car about one thing money, and they always want to know if the hybrid is cost effective. Thus it is clear that they have not taken clean air into the equation. Cars make upto 40% of our pollution, I'm not sure why the government doesn't give greater incentives for individuals to purchase these cars. For example, how about a $10,000 tax rebate on all Prius sales. If everyone who drive a Prius size car or smaller would by a Prius we would immediately cut our oil consumption by a significant amount. In addition, we would reduce air pollution oand green house gases.

Two things: 1. For those who think that we (humans) are responsible for global warming, how arrogant! this planet has been through far more changes than you can possibly imagine before there were any humans, or even mamals, around. Sea level was once at least 500 feet higher than it is today; Antarctica was covered with tropical forests. Get real!
2. For those who think they are doing such a great deed by driving hybrids, just think that they contain the largest lead-acid batteries going. These batteries are highly toxic, create large waste streams to produce, and must be replaced every 100,000 miles or so.

Hybrid cars may be over hyped right now, e85 may be a better current strategy. I just stumbled over some really good blogs about e85 fuel, and that although hybrids are good, e85 may be easier to implement in the short term..its a environmental fuel that can go in a lot of new car models...

I cannot post a link to a article in reference to John's comment, it seems everyone above me in this post can, and I don't get why I can't. Please help if you can
